Fall Waterway Clean Up 2007

Once again, the Chapter scheduled its Fall Roanoke River clean up at Green Hill Park to coincide with the expanded Clean Valley activity, Fall Waterway Clean Up 2007, on Saturday, October 6 at 9:00 am.

As we assembled to begin work, Hans and Anke Loberg stopped by on their way to the emergency room.  It seems that Hans had fallen down some steps and had some possibly broken ribs (Two were confirmed broken later at the emergency room).  To no one's surprise, Hans would not seek medical attention until he was assured that the clean up was under way.

So, we grabbed a cup of coffee and a donut (Thanks Hans and Anke!) and set out into the light drizzle to gather trash.  With the extremely low water we were able to get to just about every piece of trash we saw.  Part way into the activity we were joined by some Boy Scouts who had registered to do the same stretch of river that we were working on.  As a result, the GHP stretch of the river has never been so clean!  Due to the number of people from two different organizations it is difficult to determine out exact trash accounting, but it would be safe to say that we collected at least 8 bags of trash (Some with some really ug!! contents), 4 tires, part of a shopping cart, 1 kiddie's wading pool, 1 very large inflatable Snoopy, and several pieces of plastic sheeting.  We found more beer bottles than usual, and many of those had been deliberately broken.

The 6 Chapter members signing in for the activity were Rand Bowden, Dick Cole, Greg Grimes, Joe Nawrocki, Jack Ward, and Dick Vipperman.  Special mention should again be made of Hans and Anke's dedication to events such as this.  They organized our participation, picked up the clean up materials, registered the Chapter as participants, and as previously stated, under adverse conditions came by to drop off the materials and snacks before going to the emergency room. They are really huge assets to the Chapter.

Let's hope that Hans gets through his extreme discomfort soon.   Dick Vipperman

ROANOKE RIVER STOCKING - MONDAY, MAY 2, 2005

No, trout can't fly, nor do they grow in trees.  These are some of approximately 1,400 fish being unceremoniously tossed into Roanoke River in the lower Special Regs area on Monday, May 2.  Another 500 or so were stocked in the Green Hill Park area.  Reports are that there was a liberal sprinkling of nice browns stocked in both areas.  Several TU members, including Anke and Hans Loberg, Ron Nemura, Dick Taylor (project leader), and Bayes Wilson (Sorry if I have omitted anybody, but these were the names I was given) assisted DGIF personnel in distributing the fish.  TU involvement insures that the fish are spread along the entire sections of the river rather than just dumped in to holes that are easy to access.  Many thanks to everyone who participated.

ROANOKE RIVER SPRING CLEANUP - SATURDAY, APRIL 23, 2005

Roanoke Chapter 308-Trout Unlimited held the annual Adopt-A-Stream Clean Up of the Roanoke River in Green Hill Park in Roanoke County on Saturday April 23rd., 2005. The clean up was completed in about 2 1/2 hours with five volunteers. Volunteers were Anke Loberg, Hans Loberg, Bayes Wilson, Lloyd Parsell and Dick Taylor. Collected were twelve bags of trash and other assorted boards, tires, rubber hoses and miscellaneous goodies. Among the "treasures" were a motor vehicle radiator fan, frame from a TV screen and pieces of fishing reels. Hans Loberg collected the best find of the day with a usable pair of hemostats and Dick Taylor almost collected a nice water snake along with the plastic bag it was inhabiting It went south - he went north!

On the down side, it is very disappointing to only have 5 people (Out of a Chapter membership of 230) turn out to clean up our adopted stream

Trout Heritage Fishing Day and Kids Fishing Derby

Saturday, April 2, 2005 - 9:00am - 2:00pm

 Waid Recreation Area, Rocky Mount

Hans and Anke Loberg represented the Chapter at this annual event, sponsored by Rocky Mount Parks and Rec.  Unfortunately, the event was literally washed out when the skies opened up, raising already high waters to impossible levels.  Many thanks to Hans and Anke for their efforts.
