 August 18, 2010 - Monthly Meeting

Our regular chapter meeting on August 18 at Hollins University.  The meeting this month will be held in room 119 in the Richard Wetherill Visual Arts Center across the street from the building where we normally meet.  The main speaker will be Rod Salyers of Darkside Drifter.  Rod is a fishing guide who targets monster size Brown Trout on the South Holston.  So if you want to learn how to catch monster Brown Trout you will not want to miss this meeting. Jack

TU Annual Picnic - Saturday, July 17, 2010 - Click here to view Pictures and Story.

Our annual picnic will be Saturday July 17th at Wysor Smith's cabin in Craig County . The Chapter will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, fried chicken and all the fixing for the burgers and dogs.  Just bring a side dish and your beverage of choice.  We will have ice on hand for your drinks.  Cooking will begin around 1:00pm .  So bring the entire family and come on out for an afternoon of great times and fellowship with friends and members.  And be sure to bring your fly rods.  Wysor has 2 ponds stocked with trout that everyone is welcome to fish.  Wysor just ask that we practice catch and release and use barbless hooks or hooks with the barbs mashed down. I would like to get an idea of how many will be attending.  So if you know you are coming please respond to this email with number in your party.  If you do not respond you are still welcome to come.  We will have enough food for everyone who attends.  I would just like to get an estimated head count.  Hope to see you and your family there. Jack

Directions to Wysor's: From Roanoke, take 581 North past Valley View Mall and Peters Creek Road, then take the I-81 South (fork to the left).   After getting onto I-81, you will take the first Salem exit #141.   Then turn left at the stop sign and go 0.2 m to Rt. 311N. (turn right at the first traffic signal).   Once on Route 311 N, drive approximately 11 miles (4 miles past Catawba) and turn left on Rt. 621. (the first left after Newport Road ). Follow Rt. 621 until it crosses Craig’s Creek three times.   After crossing the third bridge, look for a mailbox on the right that says Smith.   There will be balloons to alert members that they are at the right place.

June monthly meeting - Wednesday, June 16, 2010

The Roanoke TU Chapter will hold our June meeting on Wednesday June 16 at 7:00pm in the Goodwin Room in the Moody Student Center at Hollins University.  A map of the Hollins campus is attached.  We will be showing the video Red Gold.  This a video about the controversial Pebble open pit copper, gold and molybdenum mine proposed in the Bristol Bay region of Alaska.  This is in the heart of the largest wild Pacific salmon runs in the world.  If you are interested in saving the wild Pacific salmon you don't want to miss this video.  We will also vote on an amendment to our by-laws.  The by-laws committee is proposing to change the Secretary-Treasurer as outlined in the by-laws to 2 positions consisting of a Secretary and a Treasurer.  The chapter has been operating with a Secretary and a Treasurer all along so this will be a change to make the chapter's officer structure compliant with the by-laws.  Our annual picnic is scheduled for Saturday July 17 at Wysor Smith's.  This is a family affair so make plans to attend and bring the entire family.  And don't forget to bring your fly rod.  Wysor has 2 ponds stocked with trout for catch and release barbless fishing.  I will send out a follow-up email around July 1st with directions to Wysor's place and to get a head count.  See you Wednesday evening,  Jack  Click here to view agenda for meeting.
