The Roanoke Chapter of Trout Unlimited has sponsored three new start-up “Trout
in the Classroom” (TIC) program sites in the
Trout in the Classroom programs have been in place all across the country for
more than 20 years, the results of numerous collaborations between teachers,
volunteers, government agencies and local organizations. The program was
designed specifically for teachers who wanted to incorporate more environmental
education into their curriculum. Initially started in 1997, participating
students from K – 12 learn the importance if water quality and connect with
their watershed by raising trout form eggs to fingerlings and then releasing
them in a clean, cold stream in the spring. The state of

TIC Program Report: Or How to “Free Willie!” All three pilot sites continue to maintain their fingerlings. -
Roanoke Catholic has about 30 large fingerlings (25 were
transplanted from - Glenvar was hit with a Gill disease but Brian Beers came down to Glenvar and helped them out. They now have about 110 fingerlings - Hidden Valley has about 120 fingerlings -
All totaled, there are 343 students actively using the IC program and more are indirectly involved! Plan are now being made for the April Release - Roanoke Catholic will be releasing on Monday, April 6th and the exact time is still to be determined. Mary Lupsha will be taking a school bus full of children (37) and they will release somewhere near the picnic area. - Hidden Valley will be releasing on Monday, April 27th and the exact time is to be determined later. Marilee Weichel and Jamey Hutton will be taking a school bus And around 50 children will be in attendance. They will stock some where between the picnic area and the falls. - Charlie Filer and David Mueller and their students will be stocking above the falls on April 3rd (Friday).They will probably only take the Trout Club members. I believe they will park on the road that parallels the stream and then come down the embankment to stock. -
Dick Taylor will serve as the Release Coordinator given his detailed knowledge of Roaring Run. Representatives from DGIF and The Forestry Service will be present at one or more of the releases and of, course, all Chapter members are invited to attend and help out Bring your lunch.. Dick Taylor has
been particularly helpful with directions and support and Wes Garosky has agreed
to present a 30” sampling demonstration for the children from President Obama and his family, Senators Warner and Webb and Bob Goodlatte have been invited. We hope to get media coverage from the TV as well as Newspaper. We are still recruiting site coordinators for this coming school year, so if anyone is interested,. Please let me know. Join the school release teams on site and bring your fly rods as this is a great opportunity to demonstrate to the students how to fly fish. Thanks |
