September 19, 2007 Meeting

What a great meeting we had last night.  Very informative and one of the largest group of members I have ever seen.  There were nearly 50 members in attendance.  Lets keep it up members.  It takes everyone to make our projects happen.

The meeting was called to order by president Dover.  He was kind enough to provide everyone with a special treat from Alaska, SALMON and man was it ever good.  Thanks Dover for the appetizers.

Dover presented Jack Ward the Presidents Award for all of his hard work in the chapter.

Bayes took up a collection for Delores England Memorial and a total of $263.00 was raised and we will split that between the American Cancer Society and the Kidney Foundation in her name, these two of the organizations were close to Delores' heart.

Dr. Wilson Discussed the health of the trout stocked on Carvin's Creek, Hollins University.  He said they are doing very well and reported that they are growing like weeds.  Several fish now in the 6 to 12 inch range.

Dover had a period of introducing new members and those who have not attended in the recent past.  We appreciate everyone's participation and look forward to seeing again next month.

Dover introduced our guest speakers:

Jim Gracie gave an update to what his company has thus far studied and recommends for the next stages of Carvin's Creek.

Gary Martel went over several of the regulatory changes and provide informative handouts.

Sherry Crumley discuss several things we can do to make things happen in the legislative process.  She also reported on the new Outdoor report, available on the VA DGIF website.  Check it out.

Tom Wilcox discussed the new Complementary Work Force Program.  Check it out at www.dgif.virginia.gov/volunteer.

Bud LaRouche reported on the James, Shenandoah and Jackson Rivers.  He also discussed several issues concerning the rivers.

Mike with Orvis Corporate discussed what Orvis is going to do in the valley as well as SW Virginia.  Good things to come!

George reported on the Raffle and all is going well.  Thanks to George for doing an excellent job on this.

Valley Clean Up Day will be held on October 6, 2007, at 9 a.m. at Greenhill park.  Bring your waders if possible.  Volunteers also are needed.

Big Pine, New Castle representatives were on hand to discuss their Mountain Stream Trout Fishing facility.   Check them out at www.bigpinetroutfarm.com

Any one with better notes please forward to me and I will post them to the website.  Thanks, Jon Wilson

In addition to everything else, Jim Gracie, President of Brightwater, Inc, will be at the TU meeting next Wednesday to get  ideas about restoring Carvins Creek. He also will give an overview of what can be done. His company specializes in stream restorations and  is located in Columbia, MD. He would like you to inform the membership of his appearance at the meeting so that they can ask any  questions they and express any ideas they may have. Email or call me if you need more info. Wes

Our September meeting will be very informative.  Gary R. Martel, Director of Fisheries for VDGIF, Bud LaRouche of the VDGIF, and Sherry Smith Crumley, Chairman, Board of VDGIF will be our guest speakers and will discuss many upcoming changes to the fishing regulations.  There will also be a guest speaker, Susan Alger, program director, to discuss the Auxiliary Game Warden Program,.   Jerry Payne of Big Pine Mt.
