Many thanks to Chip Davis for providing minutes of the meeting for all of us to read!! Jack, Bayes and Bill Bainter presented a gift to Dover for his service as President. A GPS Unit and subscription to Fish Alaska Magazine. Robert Marek, Fishing Trip Committee Chair, presented the newly incepted “Beaver Award” to George Kessler for his accomplishments during the previous year. (catching a beaver on his fly rod) Dick Cole will be heading up the Franklin County Kids Fishing Day on October 10, 2009. Fly Tying classes will begin at Dover’s House on 23rd Street beginning at 7pm on February 3, 2009. Dover’s number is 540‐562‐1840 to RSVP for the class. Bill Bainter has updated the Club Event Calendar on the website for 2009. Everyone remember to keep track of their man‐hours of service this year for David Wilson. There was a suggestion that the meeting dates and times be posted in the Roanoke Times each month. The Chapter now has a projector to use in conjunction with a laptop for presentations at the meetings. The new unit was utilized tonight for the Trout in the Classroom presentation. Karl Miller & Marilee Weikel (Biology & Life Science teacher at Hidden Valley M.S.) gave a presentation on Trout in the Classroom (TIC). The Roanoke Chapter’s TIC will impact over 2000 6th and 7th graders this year. Handouts were given to members present (attached). TIC was established in Virginia by Dr. David Jones in Martinsville. This is the third year the TIC program has been active in Virginia. The Roanoke Chapter has three active sites for 2008‐09 at Hidden Valley, Roanoke Catholic and Glenvar and intends to expand to a total of sixteen sites in 2009‐10. The goal is getting kids involved in conservation. Eggs are delivered in October and are raised in the classroom until being released in April or May. Each setup costs approximately $1000‐1300 to put in a classroom and around $133/year to maintain after the initial setup. The Chapter needs volunteers to be Site Coordinators. Virginia TU has a website set up with information and materials for the Site Coordinators. The Site Coordinator is a resource to the teacher and custodian of the equipment. Robert Marek is chairperson of a new committee set to raise funds for the TIC Program. Chip Davis will create a Thank You letter to send out in recognition of contributions for each donor’s tax purposes. Robert has several companies in mind to approach about the project. Mike Rigney spoke again about the Glade Creek project. A preliminary kickoff meeting was held which had representatives from DEQ, Corps of Engineers, Southwest VA Land Trust, Roanoke Greenways and Department of Natural Resources. Very enthusiastic meeting about 12.9 miles of stream going through several different communities. Conservation project needs “buy in” from landowners. Let them know that the project will help their property and understand the impact that will be made. Everything downstream from them will be affected. Need community involvement and need to identify specific projects. Ex. Sewage pipes, erosion problems, livestock in stream, etc. This is a multi‐year commitment, not short term. Funding could come from Federal, State and Local sources; grants. More ideas anyone? A signup sheet was sent around for a Committee. We need volunteers. Skills like stream assessment, communication skills, writing, etc. Marvin Huffman made the motion to approve the Glade Creek Project. A vote was taken among 38 members present and passed unanimously. Throughout the school year, students and teachers: raise trout from eggs to fry; monitor tank water quality; engage in stream habitat study; learn to appreciate water resources; begin to foster a conservation ethic, and; grow to understand ecosystems. Most programs end the year by releasing their trout in a state-approved stream near the school or within a nearby watershed. This year we will release in Roaring Run. During the year each teacher tailors the program to fit his or her curricular needs. Therefore, each program is unique. TIC has interdisciplinary applications in science, social studies, mathematics, language arts, fine arts, and physical education. TIC programs have been in place all across the country for more than 20 years, and are the result of numerous collaborations between teachers, volunteers, government agencies, and local organizations like Trout Unlimited. The programs were designed specifically for teachers who wanted to incorporate more environmental education into their curriculum. While the immediate goal of Trout in the Classroom is to increase student knowledge of water quality and coldwater conservation, its long-term goal is to reconnect an increasingly urbanized population of youth to the system of streams, rivers, and watersheds that sustain them. Successful programs have helped: connect students to their local environments and their local watersheds; teach about watershed health and water quality, and; get kids to care about fish and the environment. In Virginia, the program is in its fourth year, and there are aquariums in approximately 75 classrooms throughout the state, ranging from elementary school through high school. Roanoke Chapter 308 is sponsoring three sites this year (2008 – 2009). Some schools are raising brown trout and some are raising brook trout, all from eggs provided by hatcheries run by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Chapter 208 in Roanoke currently sponsors three (3) programs at Glenvar High School, Hidden Valley Middle School and Roanoke Catholic. As of 1/21/09, Glenvar has raised approximately 100 fingerlings; Hidden Valley 114 fingerlings and Roanoke Catholic 25 fingerlings.
