February 20, 2008 Meeting

Another great meeting with forty plus people.  Dover called the meeting to order shortly after seven.

Marvin Huffman gave a report on Carvins Creek Project.  He and Dover spoke with local land owners about posting along the creek.  The land owners granted access and permission to put up signs.  We will be requesting volunteers in the near future to assist with putting up the signs.  He also reported that he and Dover had recently walked several areas along Glade Creek looking for future projects on this water.  More to come on this.

Bayes recognized and welcomed Ron Nemura, Past President for all he has done for the chapter.  Ron was the one instrumental in getting the delayed harvest special reg. area in Salem and Green Hill Park.

Ron Nemura gave a report on his recent fishing trip to Puerto Rico.

Dr. Jenkins gave a brief report on his fishing on the Roanoke River at Green Hill Park.  His full report is on the website under the Fishing Report link.  Very informative information!!

Dick Vipperman reported on the upcoming Kiwanis Fishing Day with the kids.  He will be requesting volunteers in the near future.  This is a very rewarding experience and one you won't want to miss.  I have help the past couple of years and wouldn't miss it for anything.

Dick also introduced Fran Ferguson, Director of Development for the Center in the Square.   They are developing and upgrading many of their displays including Wet Lands, Salt Water and Fresh Water displays and conservation.  It will teach healthy earth, geology, agriculture as well as many other conservation concerns.  It has been request that Roanoke Trout Unlimited assist and volunteer with this as well as including a Trout in the Class Room project.  A private donor will fund this project.   There is also a need for expert knowledge from volunteers as well as future financial assistance.  Dick Vipperman will chair this committee and will be requesting assistance from chapter members.

Trout in the classroom projects: Jamie Hutton, Chairman has the following projects underway - Hidden Valley, sponsored by our chapter and Hollins University, private sponsor.

Jack Ward introduced are guest speakers for the evening, Project Healing Waters Flyfishing Program.  Speakers were John Bass, regional coordinator, Ed Nicholson, national coordinator, Josh Williams, disabled local veteran and Chris Rolland, Roanoke TU member and volunteer for Healing Waters as well as others whom I did not get their names.  They are asking that our chapter get involved and start a program through our local VA Hospital in Salem.  It will be a long time commitment on teaching fly tying, casting and fishing.  Chris Rowland a member of the chapter has volunteered to chair the committee and get the program started.  Steps in starting would be meeting with staff of the VA Hospital, have a kick off meeting to officially start program with volunteers and residents of the hospital.  More details on the Healing Waters Project you can visit their website at www.healingwaters.org.  I hope this program takes off and look forward volunteering my time for this worth while cause.  More details to follow in the coming months.

The drawing for the 2 night trip and rod fee's at Meadow Lane Lodge in Bath County was won by Mr. Chris Rowland.  Congratulations.

A gentleman with Virginia Mountain Treasures gave a report and requested that our chapter support and endorse their cause.  This group is active in protecting National Forests.

As always anyone with notes from the meeting please forward to me and I will post them.  Thanks, Jon Wilson
