Book Review, by Dr. Bob Jenkins

New book — Caddisflies, by Thomas Ames                Review by Bob Jenkins

It's a beaut, by far the best on caddisflies for non-entomological troutfishers

and amateur-entomology anglers. It treats eastern species north to south.

Extensively illustrated, all in color and sharp focus; hundreds of photos are of

bugs including cases, larvae, "pupae" (pharate adults), and ventral views of

winged adults; some fine pix of streams; hatch chart; treatise on tackle, and

on fishing the flies by life/functional stages.

The major section on caddisfly imitations is subdivded by life-history/functional

stages, with excellent photos, lists of materials, and comments on history and

originators. Depicted are basically different fly designs, not simple color-pattern

variations of designs.

Ames seems to really know of what he writes, and his writing is right-on, often

humorous. He occasionally states evidence against earlier literature statements.

Although diagnostic characters of some species, and all genera, families, and

higher taxa are in text format, I wish an updated key to families and genera were

included; but again, the book is mainly for anglers. Still, this book probably will

be my most valued source when trying to learn regional caddisflies.
