Gathright Project

Virginia Stream Restoration Guide

November 19, 2008 - Meeting and Election of Officers - Minutes by Chip Davis

Marvin Huffman spoke about the Gathright Dam issue. The latest news is that the power generation applicant has filed a Preliminary Application to install a power generator on the dam. The Corps of Engineers denied the applicant’s request to raise the level of the lake by two feet to maximize their operation.

UVA Law school has asked for more disclosure from the applicant about the project and supervision/oversight of the project if it is approved.

Currently, trout are naturally producing in the Jackson River below the dam. It  is at full saturation of oxygen and 17 degrees C (63 F) is the warmest water that is released. If this project causes changes to this delicate balance, it could affect the 17-18 miles of stream below the dam that is known as the Jackson River Tailwater.

The next major step is for the applicant to get a permit from the State Water Control Board.

Jack Ward told about the fishing trip to the South Holston this past weekend. 14 members went on the trip. They had some sleet and didn’t catch as many fish as usual, but a local guide shop caught a 15 pound trout while they were there. 15 POUNDS!

Chris made a presentation to Tom Brown of Orvis for his support of Project Healing Waters that provides fishing opportunities to disabled veterans.

Bayes spoke about the Chapter’s investigation of building a handicap fishing ramp on the Roanoke River below the Colorado Street Bridge. The local government doesn’t want the ramp to be built in the Special Regulations area. Bud  LaRoche brought up the fact that a handicap ramp has been planned for Smith Park in Roanoke. He will check the status with the Corps of Engineers. The City of Salem may want their ramp to be built closer to the City’s water supply?

A sheet was passed around for members to sign up if they are interested in a Fly Tying class. The only expense to members for the class would be to provide your own tying materials. Dover England will be heading up the class.

Of the three sites set up for Trout in the Classroom, Hidden Valley Middle and Glenvar seem to be doing OK, however Roanoke Catholic had a fungus problem and lost most of their fish. They have corrected the problem and may be able to share some of their remaining fish from the other sites.

This year’s raffle generated $4183.20 for the chapter. That was down from $4585 last year.

Mike Rigney gave a presentation to the Chapter about a joint effort for the restoration of Glade Creek. This creek has held trout in the past and could possibly be cleaned up to provide a good habitat again
