October 21, 2009 Meeting - More details and pictures to follow. Click here to see agenda of meeting. Minutes of Meeting: April 2010,
UVA will be conducting the Virginia Trout Stream Sensitivity Study and needs ten
volunteers for stream sampling. Contact Bill Bainter if interested. With the
addition of Trout in the Classroom and new Chapter business, it was suggested to schedule
meetings in the months of August and December in which we traditionally have not
had meetings. A motion was made and a vote taken among members present and it
was decided to add a meeting in August and a social event for December starting
in 2010. Project
Healing Waters - Chris Rowland sad the season is winding down and that future
outpatient programs are being planned. Trout in the
Classroom - Karl Miller reports that there are 23 programs up and running for
this school year. An amazing increase from 3 schools last year. Special thanks
to Karl and Robert Marek in their fundraising efforts and hard work. Karl has
been named Regional Coordinator for T.I.C. by the State Council. Ideas are being
solicited for coldwater streams to stock. Email Karl with ideas at
knj_miller@msn.com. Glade Creek
Project Update (Bill Bainter) - no update because there was no meeting held this
month. Gathright
Dam Update (Marvin Huffman) - The chapter is re-registering a letter if interest
with the Corps of Engineers. Also, the Chapter has a meeting scheduled in
Richmond for November 18 to discuss the project with Ms Wynn. Reports of
seepage around the dam have been made and the lake level is being dropped to
investigate. Dick
reported that the Kids Fishing Day in Franklin County was a big success. 100
kids participated. The county donated 4 fly tying kits and 4 Fly Fishing Combos
that were given away. Also Save Our Streams representative Wes Jargowsky had a
display with stream insects that was a hit with the kids. Green Hill
Cleanup (Hans Loberg) went well with 13 members on hand. The Boy Scouts also
collected trash at the park. For the entire cleanup along the Roanoke River, 21
tons of trash was removed. Winter Fly
Tying sessions will be held again this year. The first will be at Jack Ward's
house on Thursday, Nov 5. There was
discussion of the Chapter's meeting place and if we should continue to meet at
Center in the Square. Since parking is sometimes a problem downtown some members
have suggested changing the meeting place to Friendship Manor, Roanoke Catholic
School or the Salem Civic Center. A decision will have to be made prior to
January when our rent will be due at Center in the Square. The raffle
was held and proceeds totaled $2857. The amounts for past years have been $4898
(2008), $5128 (2007) and $5560 (2006).
