September - October -November- December 2007 Latest News Hugh C. Garst. Hugh, who retired from
HSMM in 2003, passed away on December 24 after a courageous battle with cancer.
For those of you who may not have had the pleasure of working with Hugh, he was
a true gentleman. His quiet demeanor often hid a well-sharpened, quick,
and very dry sense of humor. Hugh enjoyed the outdoors through a variety
of activities including hiking and rock-hounding. He was also an avid
tennis player. He was a member of Roanoke Valley TU. Hugh is survived by
his wife, Charlotte, and his son, Clay. Hugh will always be remembered for
his dedication to his family and to this firm, and he will truly be missed.
I ask that you join me in keeping Charlotte and Clay in your thoughts and
prayers as they face this difficult time. Visitation will be held on

I wish to express my sincere appreciation to everyone for the
kindness shown to me and my family during the time of my wife's death in
August. Your cards, food, and many other expressions of sympathy were
greatly appreciated and will always be remembered.
As I think about the many interesting programs and activities
which we have had this year I am extremely pleased with the progress we are
making particularly with the environmental and youth activities. Our
programs this year have included Game Warden Sgt. Brian Young, Sherry
Crumley and Bud LaRouche from the Fish and Game, Virginia TU
President John Ross, Brian Beers from the Paint Bank Fish Hatchery, fly
tying by several of our members, and a most enjoyable picnic at Wysor Smith's
place in Craig County. Youth activities have included assisting with
Kiwanis Kids Day at the Baptist Home, Botetourt Children Fishing
Day, and Franklin County Heritage Day.and sponsoring a student to the state TU
Center Camp. A busy and exciting year with a major event yet
to come: THE ANNUAL RAFFLE IN OCTOBER.
Preparations are now well along for the raffle under the able
direction of George Kesler, Chairman of the Raffle Committee. George did
an outstanding job in this capacity last year and all of us appreciate his
services again . All prizes are being DONATED this year. This
certainly and indication of the postive support we have from members and
supporting firms. Many thanks to George and everyone for the work and
effort that goes into making the raffle a success. Funds from the raffle will
help support our main environmental project of Carvins Creek at Hollins
University. Fingerling trout have been stocked in the creek and seem to
be doing well despite the hot summer we have had. The Orvis Company has
expressed interest in being a supporter of the project and perhaps other local
environmental projects.
Again I wish to say thanks for the many considerations
and support shown to me personally and as Chapter President. Best wishes
to everyone. Let's keep up the good work.
Dover England, President
