News on Didymo

The nuisance/invasive algae Didymosphenia geminata has captured the attention of scientists and managers internationally as changes in the distribution and abundance of the organism have occurred.  As a professional or individual involved in invasive species issues, we are providing you with pertinent information regarding D. geminata.  The white paper, "Increase in nuisance blooms and geographic expansion of the freshwater diatom Didymosph

enia geminata: recommendations for response", is now available at: http://www.epa.gov/region8/water/didymosphenia/

The new CD, the Ultimate Didymo Resource CD,  which contains the technical white paper on the nuisance/invasive algae authored by Sarah Spaulding of the EPA and Leah Elwell of the Federation of Fly Fishers, a video documentary and several information resources about aquatic invasive species is also now available from the Federation of Fly Fishers.  This CD aims to provide not only up-to-date scientific knowledge, but helpful information for use in outreach efforts.  Please contact Leah Elwell with the FFF for copies of the CD.   If you have additional contacts that this information should be provided to, please forward this email.  Also, please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of any other help or provide information about Didymo.

Kind regards,

March 21, 2007 Meeting

The March meeting will be devoted to a discussion of the stream renovation project at Hollins College as the topic for the night.

Friday, March 9, 2007

Had a pretty good turn out with about 10-12 TU members and Dr. Morgan Wilson of Hollins along with another professor; but, sorry I didn't get his name. We walked the stream from the parking lot back about a quarter mile towards Rt. 11, then. went back upstream to the I-81 entrance where it comes under the Interstate. Probably covered a little over a mile of stream. A couple of intrepid souls walked on the big pipe along side the stream that goes under the Interstate and went to look at the land on the upper end. They were smart and came back via a pass under the Interstate a short ways north of the stream entrance. The other side of the Interstate has some cows there; so, that makes the water quality questionable till it's tested. Dover tested the temperature down by the parking lot at 48° and I tested it up near the Interstate at 46°.  Believe that there will be a grant form sent to TU for maybe $30,000.00 within the next two weeks if this project is feasible and approved by the College etc. Prof. Wilson is going to set up a meeting with the College President to discuss the project sometime next week. Have to do it fast cause we only have two weeks to get the application in for the grant.  Click here for Pictures of Stream and story.

March 7, 2007, Philpott Dam Study

Dover England, Bill Bainter, David Vecellio, Tom Brown, Jack Ward and, Hans and Anke Loberg attended a standing room only meeting of over a hundred people on Wednesday night March 7th at the Henry County Administration Building in Martinsville .  John Ross president of the Virginia TU Council was also in attendance.  Along with members of the Smith River Chapter of TU.

The meeting was conducted by Ben Lane of the US Army Corp of Engineers for the purpose of discussing the Philpott Dam 216 Study. He explained that the Corp of Engineers is in the second year of a seven year study that will determine a course of action. This did not go over very well with most in attendance.  Most felt it is time to stop studying and do something. Suggestions from the crowd ranged from changing the release from the dam to a more regulated flow, shut down the generators or remove the screens on the intakes of the generators (if any exist) to allow the forage fish to past through.

Lane said the types of suggestions made at the meeting are needed and the study may find they are the solutions for the problem. But he repeatedly said the study is not only required by laws and by Congress, it also is required because even though a solution may seem easy and simple, it may have unknown consequences.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS – KIDS FISHING DAY

We have some details as to how we may assist the Kiwanis with their Kids Fishing Day event on SATURDAY, APRIL 21.  We specifically need someone to instruct kids on:

·        Fish facts (body parts, differences in species, what they eat, where they hang out, etc.)

·        Fishing Safety (how to remove a hook, how not to get hooked, bank/water considerations, sunburn, critters, etc)

·        Fishing equipment (specifically spin-cast – how components work and basics of how to use)

·        Casting/fishing techniques (spin-cast equipment  - how to cast and retrieve the lure/bait, how to set a hook, and              how to retrieve a fish)

We would like to have about six people to handle the above areas of instruction.  The kids would be broken down into groups and moved through different instruction stations.  Efficiency and movement would be prime considerations and teams of two people per station would probably expedite the process.  The instructors could then act as fishing guides after the instruction.  That’s the real fun part - besides eating : )

The list above was provided by the Kiwanis.  In addition to the functions above, someone is all set to do a bit of conservation/ecology.  So, TU is being to provide the “how to safely fish for what” parts of the program.

If you can help, please e-mail Dick Vipperman at dickvipp@aol.com or call 540 772 0470.  Believe me, you will have a ball!

Further specific functions will be defined as the day comes closer, but I would like to wrap up these functions as soon as possible.  Please contact me ASAP.

For further details refer to the earlier post on this web site and future postings as requirements become known.  Let’s show the kids that Chapter 308 can do a first class job.

"Name That Stream"

George Kesler has come up with a really neat idea.  "Name that stream".  Each month we will post a new photograph (please submit photos to Jon with name and location) and our members can try to guess where the stream is located.  Email your answer to Jon Wilson.  Maybe we can come up with a small reward for the first correct answer?  Have fun!!

Thursday, February 8, 2007 Roanoke River Stocking.

Click here for Green Hill Park Stocking.

Click here for Salem below Colorado Street Bridge Stocking.

While at Green Hill, we got the report that a tan pickup truck was scoping out the stocking at the Colorado street bridge. Someone else reported that they had seen a tan pickup truck parked one evening and 3 men about 30-40 years old were catching fish in the delayed harvest area and putting them in the truck and going back to fish some more.  As I drove back to from the area, I thought about Sonny Tarpley’s comments to me that he would see to it that the police would monitor the area for poaching. As Sonny is no longer mayor, I still thought it would be worth a call to him. However, as I pulled into Shanghi for lunch, there was a Salem squad car in the lot. I talked to an officer and he will file a report to the night crew and they will look at the area for us. I told them the rules – catch & release for 9 months and artificial bait only. He said they don’t normally enforce game laws but he said they would handle this. The down side is there is no weekend night shift.  I will cruise by this weekend to see what I may see.  If you do see someone poaching and if possible, get the license # of the vehicle and contact: DGIF at 800-237-5751who can dispatch a Game Warden or the Salem Sheriff Dept. 375-3040 and the Roanoke County Sheriff Dept. for the Green Hill Park 387-6300.

FISHING DAY WITH THE KIWANIS - April 21, 2007

This is an EARLY notification that we have again been invited to assist the Kiwanis with their annual Fishing Day with the Kiwanis.  This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, April 21 at the Baptist Children’s Home in Salem .  There will be a rain date in case of inclement weather.

The Kiwanis will stock a pond on the Baptist Children’s Home property with trout a few days before the event.  Then, on the day of the event, underprivileged kids from several youth organizations will be bussed in for a half day of instruction, fishing, and picnicking.  Most of the kids are under 10 years old, and for most of them, this will be their first fishing experience.  Once the event is over, the kids will be taken back, with their fish, to their sponsoring organizations.

The primary activities that we will be involved in will be to provide some basic fishing instruction to the kids, to assist them as they fish, and provide some fish cleaning services.  As we found out last year, this makes for a really fun day.

To give you some idea as to how the event is scheduled, the tentative agenda is as follows:

  8:00  -  9:00 am     Preparation and setup
  9:00 - 10:00 am
Children arrive, register, and go receive instruction 10:00 - 12:00 Kids fish

Children go home

A great lunch will be provided for all volunteers and there will probably be some hugs from the kids, especially the ones who catch fish.

So, mark your calendar and as the date approaches, more details will be provided.  We will be doing signups as we get closer to April.

If you have questions call or e-mail Dick Vipperman at 772-0470 or dickvipp@aol.com

NOTE:  As we discovered last year, this is a great couples activity.  My wife, who does not fish, came along and she had a ball.  She escorted kids from our group to the cleaning station with their catch while I worked with the others as they were fishing.  We made a great team.  So, get your spouse to come with you.   Never let it be said that you never take her/him anywhere!  Dick Vipperman
