Trout Unlimited Meeting, Saturday, August 25, 2007

Jack Ward, Ron Herring and a friend of his Rupert Cutler and my self attended the meeting in Verona Yesterday.  It was a much better meeting than the last ones I attended thanks to Rupert.  He brought a lot of information to the table regarding Conservation groups in Virginia and their contacts.  Ross is also shooting for Sept 29 or 30 to coordinating with Orvis days to announce the I85 CARE project on the campus of Hollins University.  Ross is planning on contacting Morgan Wilson to get approval and make the arrangements.  Jack Ward

The Hunters for the Hungry Banquet

Attached is the copy of the information you put in the window for us at the downtown Orvis store. I hope you can get some info into your TU news letter or at least forward it to those members you think would be interested.  The Hunters for the Hungry banquet will be held at the Dave Sarmadi Mitsubishi showroom on Sept 8, 2007 6PM at 1820 W. Main St Salem Va.  The trout fishing trip will be auctioned off at the banquet.

For information about the fishing trip, members can contact me @ 540-384-6990 or my cell 540-521-7068.  Roanoke  TU  members Hans and Anka Loberg have been fishing at the lodge for a several years now and could also answer questions about the fishing.

The trip is for May 2008 at a mutually agreed time for up to 6 people. All lodging, meals and guiding are included .   The fishing is on Kettle Creek in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania (or other nearby great trout streams ) Drive time from Roanoke to the lodge is about 8 hrs.  I suggest the month of may because it will be the peak month for fly fishing on Kettle Creek.

One hundred percent  of the live auction selling price will go to Hunters for the Hungry.

More info on Kettle Creek is at this web site.

Tickets to the Hunters for the Hungry banquet can be purchased at Dave Sarmadi Mitsubishi or Iron Sports Customs 3022 Trinle Ave Salem Va.  Tickets to the banquet can also be purchased by calling Jeff Fletcher @ 540-985-6523 or Fred And Phyllis Wells @ 540-992-3874.

I am a member of the Kettle Creek TU chapter, I love to fish for trout and I am a great supporter of the Hunters for the Hungry.  This will make a great trip for a group of fisherman or family and help pay for distribution and processing of meals provided by Hunters for the Hungry to those in need. Thank you ahead for any help you can provide-   DelEyer

Proposed Regulation Amendment (concerning Dropper Flies)

4 VAC 15-330-100. Fish: Trout Fishing. "Artificial lure" defined.

Summary:  The recommendation is to clarify that a multiple number of single-hook artificial lures, such as dropper flies, fished in a series, may be used in single-hook artificial lure only waters.

Rationale: 4VAC 15-330-110, 4VAC 15-330-120, 4VAC 15-330-130, 4VAC 15-330-140, and 4VAC 15-330-150 are all special trout water regulations and all require the use of single-hook artificial lures. There has been considerable confusion whether these regulations restrict fishing to a single lure. The use of dropper flies (a second fly fished in series) has become very popular among anglers who fish these special regulation trout waters. Although fishing a dropper fly can be more effective in catching fish, the use of such techniques does not impact the trout population in these streams. This regulation change will clearly make it legal to use a number of single-hook lures fished in a series (such as dropper flies) when fishing these special regulation trout waters.

Virginia State TU Meeting, July 14, 2007

Dover wanted this posted on the website that we will have three members representing our chapter at the state TU meeting next Saturday, July 14th at 10 am at the VGDIF Verona office.  Tom Brown, Ron Herring, and Jack Ward are going.  Dover is working on Sat.and can't attend.  Several important items will be on the agenda including the Interstate - 81  Coldwaters Area Restoration Effort; Shenandoah Headwaters River Initiative;. partnerships with land conservancies; discussion on work rhat Ray Mullens, TU's soon-to-be new employee working out of Wise in SW Va, Ky, and Tennessee, will undertake.  Bayes

Hollins Stream Monitors

Sorry for the confusion, but I think Dover and I got our dates mixed up.  I actually installed them this morning at six locations along the streambed from the input of the sulfur spring to below the iron bridge (downstream from I-81).  Several of the probes are in the areas where the fish were originally stocked.  If you are interested, I can try to take some photos of what they look like and send to you.  Also, the fish seem to being doing very well so far – many are still schooled up in the deeper pools, but I think this is the case more for the larger rainbows that were stocked than the fingerling browns.  Folks from the grounds crew are feeding them on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of each week, and they (mostly the larger rainbows) voraciously consume the food.  We have not seen any dead, dying, or sluggish fish.  Best,  Morgan

Once again, the Chapter will provide Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Barbeque, buns and drinks. Attendees are asked to bring a side dish or dessert. (Guests welcome) Please email Chip Davis at chipdavis1@cox.net or call either Chip at 540-529- 0375 or Jack Ward at 540 -265-1788 if you plan to attend. That way, we will know how much food to bring.   Bring your fly rod as there are two stocked ponds. Barbless hooks only. The picnic is always a great time and provides camaraderie and fellowship among friends and members.
