Anke and Hans again represented The Roanoke Chapter of Trout
Unlimited in assisting the Franklin County Parks and Recreation people and
others with their Trout Heritage Fishing Day and Kids Fishing Derby on the
Pigg River in Waid Recreation Area in Rocky Mount on Saturday, April 7
from 9am to 12noon.
Franklin County provided a table and a big "Trout
Unlimited" banner. We provided some TU related handouts, did some fly
tying and some casting.
Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate. It was cold,
barely above freezing, windy and occasionally a few snowflakes were flying so
neither fly tying nor casting created much interest. At least it did not rain,
but the table canopies blew away in some of the sudden wind gusts.
The cold weather, however, did not deter the brave hardy old geezers
that every year elbow their way into the part of the river reserved for the
kids! Anyway, it appeared that most of the kids caught some trout, and prizes
and pizza afterward were appreciated as the temperature climbed up to 36
degrees.

Click here for detailed Minutes of March 2007 Meeting. Thanks to Jamie Hutton for preparing these for the chapter. Roanoke River Cleanup, Saturday, March 31, 2007. The following TU members showed up at the picnic shelter at Green Hill Park at 9:00am: Bill Bainter, Dover England, Bobby Hammock, Ron Herring, Anke Loberg, Hans Loberg, Scott McClelland, Ken Seagle, Roger Tims, Dick Vipperman, Jack Ward, Barry Whitt and Bayes Wilson.
We did not coordinate the coffee and doughnut provision too well; Bayes, Dover and the Lobergs all provided coffee, water, muffins and doughnuts; -enough energy to clean up all of Roanoke county.
The area had not looked too bad at all so we did not expect much trash, but it turned out that we made what must have been a record trash haul. We covered the entire stretch and collected 20 bags of trash while Dover stood steadfast guard over the coffee and doughnuts at the picnic shelter. Special recognition goes to the downstream crew headed up by Dick Vipperman; they hauled out ten tires, one tire rim, one big oil drum, a metal garbage can, a big tarp and various other pieces of scrap metal.
In addition the collection consisted of pieces of clothing, beer bottles, plenty of beer cans, plastic grocery bags, plastic wrappings, numerous cigarette butts, soft drink bottles, various pieces of hard plastic.
It should be noted that the big oil drum, halfway buried in mud and sand had "survived" several past clean-ups; -it took Dick Vipperman, against the advice of Anke, to dislodge the drum and roll it out to the road. He either deserves a medal, - or a whipping, -I'm not sure what is most appropriate! We got rain, the weather paid no attention to the forecast predicting rain in the late afternoon. Anke, not wearing a cap, looked like she had been dragged out of the river!
Super turn out, and a super effort by all. Afterward, Dover handed out neat egg flies to all for their effort (-and, by the way, not a single doughnut got stolen...) Hans Loberg Announcement:

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS – KIDS FISHING DAY
We
have some details as to how we may assist the Kiwanis
with their Kids Fishing Day
event on SATURDAY, APRIL 21.
We specifically need someone to instruct kids on:
·
Fish facts (body parts,
differences in species, what they eat, where they hang out, etc.)
·
Fishing Safety (how to
remove a hook, how not to get hooked, bank/water considerations, sunburn,
critters, etc)
·
Fishing equipment
(specifically spin-cast – how components work and basics of how to use)
·
Casting/fishing techniques
(spin-cast equipment - how to cast
and retrieve the lure/bait, how to set a hook, and how to retrieve a fish)
We
would like to have about six people to handle the above areas of instruction.
The kids would be broken down into groups and moved through different
instruction stations. Efficiency and
movement would be prime considerations and teams of two people per station would
probably expedite the process. The
instructors could then act as fishing guides after the instruction.
That’s the real fun part - besides eating : )
The
list above was provided by the Kiwanis. In
addition to the functions above, someone is all set to do a bit of
conservation/ecology. So, TU is
being to provide the “how to safely fish for what” parts of the program.
If
you can help, please e-mail Dick Vipperman at dickvipp@aol.com
or call 540 772 0470. Believe me,
you will have a ball!
Further
specific functions will be defined as the day comes closer, but I would like to
wrap up these functions as soon as possible.
Please contact me ASAP.
For
further details refer to the earlier post on this web site and future postings
as requirements become known. Let’s
show the kids that Chapter 308 can do a first class job.
