April 20, 2011 Meeting

We have an exceptional presentation scheduled for our regular meeting on Wednesday, April 20th.  Please join us for an Introduction to Tenkara Fly Fishing, by local TU member Kevin Kelleher, author of  "Tenkara: Radically Simple Ultralight Fly Fishing", recently published by Lyons Press/Globe Pequot. This inexpensive and easy to learn fly fishing method is great for beginners and liberating for the experienced, and is especially suited for small streams and the backpacking angler. In addition to some brief audiovisuals, Kevin will bring a sampling of tenkara rods and examples of the traditional Japanese flies.  Take a look at the Youtube Video links below.  Date:  Wednesday, April 20, 2011 Location:  Hollins University - Moody Student Center - Goodwin Rm - 1st Floor Time:  7:00pm www.youtube.com/watch?v=bufZHI7u-z8

Spring Clean Valley Day - Saturday, April 9, 2011

The Clean Valley Council has set the Spring Clean Valley Day for Saturday, April 9, 2011.  In the past we have been able to complete our cleanup at Green Hill Park in the mornings.  This year the Susan G. Komen walk/run is scheduled for Saturday morning and Green Hill Park is closed to other events until noon.  Due to this conflict, our Cleanup is being moved to Saturday afternoon, April 9th at 1:00pm. Komen race participants or others may be using the picnic shelter for an after-race luncheon, so we will have to meet near the shelter.  Please come out and participate in this chapter initiative.  If you plan to participate, please reply to this email. Thanks, Hans and Anke Loberg Stocking and Cleanup Committee

Project Healing Waters Event – Back Creek

Jack Ward and Bill Bainter participated as guides at a Project Healing Waters Event held on Back Creek in Bath County .  The event covered October 12 thru October 14, 2010 with  two days of fishing.  The event included 12 veterans and 12 guides and was sponsored by the Guildfoil Foundation and Dominion Power.  The delayed harvest section of back creek was divided into 12 beats.  Each morning and afternoon the Vets drew for their beat and their guide.  Hundreds of fish were caught and released.  The event included a stream shocking by Dominion biologist and a presentations by Paul Bugas with VDGIF.  PHW is a great program that recognizes our Vets for there service and educates them in the joys and skills of fly fishing. Stocking Report - Green Hill Park and Salem Section Wednesday, October 13, 2010

Green Hill Park, Wednesday, Oct 13, 2010 - We had a lower than normal turnout of volunteers due to a number of conflicts. The day started with pouring rain before 9am, but when Andy arrived with the stocking truck the weather was looking up and we tucked away the rain gear.  Andy provided us with a nice combination of lively Browns and Rainbows from the Paint Bank hatchery. Many jumped out of the buckets trying to get to the river quicker. The stocking took us about 1hr, 20mins.  Then we had to conduct a search and operation in an attempt to find Dick Taylor’s missing cellphone. It was eventually found by Anke as we traced our route, repetitively calling Dick’s cell phone number.  The  volunteers consisted of Bob Crawshaw, Hoppy Holsinger, Anke Loberg, Hans Loberg, Richard Pitts and Dick Taylor.

Thanks to all, great job.

Salem Section Roanoke River - Wednesday, Oct 13, 2010 - A wet start didn't dampen the spirit and enthusiasm of TUer's and friendly waiting fisherman.  The Colorado section was stocked heavily with nice bows and browns, more large fish than normal.  Karl Miller saved the day by providing his ATV and trailer to transport our fish laden buckets to the various stocking points along the Greenway.  We stocked over 1,100 pounds of fish over a two hour period.  Several folks helped for part of the time but as one would leave another jumped in to help.  When you see Karl please thank him for the use of his machine, without it we would have been very short handed.  Both the Salem Police and Conservation Police visited and promised to keep a careful eye on the area.  Signs need to be refreshed in places, a good project for these beautiful fall days along with matching the hatch for some of the lunkers.

Fall Cleanup, Green Hill Park, Saturday, October 2, 2010, 9:00am

Fall Cleanup Report, Green Hill Park,  The bi-annual clean up of the Roanoke River and river bank between the Greenway and the river in Green Hill Park went over quite well in spite of a lower than usual turnout.  We started at the picnic shelter with coffee and some of Anke’s coffee cake and zucchini bread.  Fortunately, the section along the Greenway was much cleaner than usual and only Dick Taylor managed to find the one spot with enough trash to fill his bag. No big items this time, mainly glass and plastic bottles, soda cans, plastic bags, picnic leftovers and waterlogged diapers (they get heavy), some shoes and clothing.  The participant were Bill Bainter, Dick Cole, Whit Ellerman, Anke Loberg, Hans Loberg, Dick Taylor and Jack Ward.  Click here for picture of crew.

June monthly meeting - Wednesday, June 16, 2010

The Roanoke TU Chapter will hold our June meeting on Wednesday June 16 at 7:00pm in the Goodwin Room in the Moody Student Center at Hollins University.  A map of the Hollins campus is attached.  We will be showing the video Red Gold.  This a video about the controversial Pebble open pit copper, gold and molybdenum mine proposed in the Bristol Bay region of Alaska.  This is in the heart of the largest wild Pacific salmon runs in the world.  If you are interested in saving the wild Pacific salmon you don't want to miss this video.  We will also vote on an amendment to our by-laws.  The by-laws committee is proposing to change the Secretary-Treasurer as outlined in the by-laws to 2 positions consisting of a Secretary and a Treasurer.  The chapter has been operating with a Secretary and a Treasurer all along so this will be a change to make the chapter's officer structure compliant with the by-laws.  Our annual picnic is scheduled for Saturday July 17 at Wysor Smith's.  This is a family affair so make plans to attend and bring the entire family.  And don't forget to bring your fly rod.  Wysor has 2 ponds stocked with trout for catch and release barbless fishing.  I will send out a follow-up email around July 1st with directions to Wysor's place and to get a head count.  See you Wednesday evening,  Jack  Click here to view agenda for meeting.
